How to Take Full Advantage of Your Skylights

Houses with a number of skylights have an inherent beauty and attraction.  Large Widow walls with angled skylights helps you to take full benefit of the natural beauty outside, especially if your house is situated in a scenic location or a lakeside.  These skylights also bring in lot of light and sun and you can also have a peek at the night sky after sunset. 

Nevertheless, there is an inherent drawback of having huge angled skylight, especially during summer months.  These skylights can bring in excessive amount of sunlight and heat when the sun is high in the sky resulting in a steep increase in your air-conditioning and cooling costs.  When uncovered, these skylights can also cause loss of heat during winter.

The solution to this problem would be to install proper coverings to the skylights so that it can prevent excessive heat during summer and heat loss during winter.  You also need have adequate control over the light coming inside to maintain ambient illumination inside the rooms.  The ideal way to do this would be to install electric roof blinds, screens or shades on the skylights.

The advantage of having motorized blinds, shades or screens is that they provide you full control over the airflow, lighting and heat radiation through the skylights.   You can choose from a variety of materials including those which provide UV protection, clear visibility or opacity according to your specific needs.

During summer, the excessive heat coming in the house without adequate ventilation can cause the heat to trap inside the house creating a feeling of being inside an oven.  You can avoid this by installing both shades and screens on the skylights to allow free air flow.  By opening these shades and blinds, especially those near the ceilings at both sides of the house you can allow the heated air to go out and bring in cool air by cross ventilation.
